Shifting land use

Here is an area where I saw Rock walls lace their way through forests.  Now, why would this be?  My guess is the walls were built years ago, maybe 16 or 17 hundreds.  Those famous New England rock walls.  Since then, farming has ceased and forest has grown back in this area.  Changing land use patterns can mean reforestation.  Somewhere north of Worchester, Massachusetts, if my memory is correct.  Seen on my 1991 cross country bike trip.
